Cops step up search for Simbu, tabs on mobile

Close on the heels of a spate of complaints lodged against actor Simbu and music composer Anirudh over the  controversial 'beep song', the city police has intensified its search for the duo.

The two are facing criminal cases for the song, which allegedly contains vulgar lyrics denigrating women.

According to sources, the cyber crime police are tracking the mobile phone of Simbu to pin his whereabouts.

Reports say that a team of police visited the actor's house at Masilamani Street in T Nagar late last night. Since the actor was not present at home during the enquiry, they have stepped up the search for him.

It is said a strict vigil is being maintained at Chennai airport to keep track of when Anirudh will be returning from Toronto and also to prevent Simbu from going abroad.

The Madras High Court yesterday declined to grant any relief, including interim stay on police summons or interim anticipatory bail, to Simbu. Justice B Rajendran, before whom the advance bail petition filed by Simbu, came up, directed the Coimbatore police to extend the date of personal appearance of the actor before 2 January to 5 January when the court reopens after Christmas-New Year holidays.

Submitting that mischief was played by someone without Simbu's knowledge, senior counsel R Muthukumaraswamy for the actor said arrest and custodial interrogation were not necessary.

The prosecution, however, said the impact of the song was not confined only to the city or the state but across the country. The Women Lawyers Association has opposed anticipatory bail to the actor.

The Coimbatore Race Course Police had registered case against the actor and composer Anirudh Ravichander following a complaint from the Coimbatore unit of the All India Democratic Women's Association on 12 December. The Race Course Police issued summons to both artistes, asking them to appear before it on 2 January for inquiry. However, both of them have sought time.
